WORKSHOPS

AGENDA - Day Three | Wednesday, 25 January, 2012

Registration will commence at 8:00 and the workshops will begin at 9:00 in the morning. Lunch will be served at 12:30 with morning and afternoon breaks at the allocated times. The workshops will finish at 17:00.

Workshop A: Driving innovation with smart research investment and effective science and technology policy

Evaluating investment in research

In the absence of innovation, overcoming the biggest economic challenges faced in a generation will be increasingly difficult and costly. Innovation is driven by research and evaluation of the returns on this investment is now a key component of science policy initiatives in many countries. Standard measures such as number and quality of publications, conference presentations and resulting patents remain important indicators but are widely acknowledged as very limited gauges of academic and non-academic impact. This workshop will focus on different return on investment and real-time evaluation methods for assessing the payback from investment in science and research..

How can we formulate useful indicators of success in research and innovation investment?
What methodologies can we use to understand what works in terms of science funding?
What role do quantitative and qualitative methods have in evaluating the breadth and depth of research investments?
How can science policy learn from a better understanding of the impact of its investments?

Demand driven science, technology and innovation policy

Most science, technology and innovation policy has traditionally focused on increasing the output or supply of science and technology. But successful innovation only occurs when there is demand for what is created by scientists and technologists.   Without demand, scientific and technological outputs are likely to have little economic or social value. Policymakers have increasingly begun to experiment with policy designed to use demand to stimulate high quality science and technology.

What demand based policy mechanisms are available to stimulate innovation?
How can procurement and regulation be used to stimulate innovation? How do policymakers become innovation    entrepreneurs?
Can crowdsourcing and prizes be used to encourage innovation?
What technologies, techniques and methods can be used to engage society and reflect the dynamic implications of policy    choices?

Workshop B: Embedding innovation and sustainable development into your business strategy

There are two critical components vital to success in business in the current global economic climate and these are innovation and sustainable development. What many organisations often fail to realise is that innovation is a key enabler of sustainable development and that it needs to be developed and managed on a strategic level. This workshop will go into the details of embedding innovation and sustainable development into your strategy from a strategic perspective, with key insights and examples as to how that can be done for practical results.

Topics to be covered :

Examining sustainable development and innovation from a strategic perspective

Assessing workable innovation and creativity competency frameworks

Embedding lateral thinking throughout the organisation through the right selection, training and development

Developing innovation as an integral part of performance and rewarding and recognizing it accordingly

Integrating innovation and creativity into the business strategy

Developing a workable action plan for your organisation

Workshop C: Developing smart strategies to foster innovation in large-scale organisations

If we are used to doing things in a particular manner, how are we supposed to be able to think beyond that and seek to innovate and change for the better? This is a key strategic question for large scale organisations with well established enterprise systems and processes that help keep order. Size however, does not need to be a hindrance when it comes to harnessing the power of innovation. Innovation is neither defined by the IT knowledge management systems configuration that exists in yours. So how can you enable innovation through a smart strategic approach in a large scale organisation?  This workshop will take the lessons learned from some of the best government and business organisations out there to demonstrate a new and smart way of approaching this.

Topics to be covered :

Examining how innovation helps support and achieve your strategic goals

Developing a strategy for innovation in a large scale organisation

Exploring the differences in creating an innovation strategy that focuses on policy vs. the bottom line

Understanding the relative innovation strengths and weaknesses of public vs. private sector organisations

Resolving the key challenges and barriers to innovation

Examining how innovation fits within the modern enterprise

Using social media to harness innovation

Developing innovation metrics which help measure impact on bottom line

Developing a step-by-step approach to embedding innovation in your strategy and achieving desired results
